Sealing around shower head and control valve opening.
I know Kerdi and Laticrete make these cool gaskets

you place around these areas but I'm wondering what people used before these clever inventions? My impression is that they simply provide a waterproof ridge that diverts water away from the opening. Wouldn't a bead of silicone work just as well. I'm trying to avoid buying a lot of un necessary stuff.

Hi Doug, for the small pipes you can use sheet membrane and just cut the hole slightly smaller and stretch the membrane over the temporary pipe. For the mixer valve you can create a ridge with sealant to divert any potential water around the valve.
