Hardie backerboard
I was going to use regular Hardie backerboard, but what about usin HardieBacker with HydroDefense Technology? Instead of coating everything with hydro ban, I would just coat the joints and the mud deck area.

I've never used it before. I looked online though.
23$ a sheet, similar to Go-Board.
Installs like foam, sealant on seams and fasteners. But no washers needed.
Looks like a great alternative. Price is right.
I'd be interested to see how it goes on your project.
I did find one negative online, the weight. I'm getting older and I can carry 10 sheets of foam into the job at one time.
That's not happening with the Hardie.
