Shower Waterproofing

"Traditional" shower pan vs...

I've done four showers over the past six years. Two were on concrete slab and two on second floor with plywood subfloor (one hot mop and three with vinyl liners)

I'm doing another now on a second floor and am reviewing if my "traditional" method is still sufficient or if there are compelling reasons to go with another system. Here's what I did on the last shower pan:

1. Deck mud sloped to drain 3/4" thick at linear drain

2. Vinyl shower pan liner under pan and over curb

3. Deck mud sloped 1/4" per foot

4. Hardiebacker walls sit on or just above the deck mud

5. Cover the curb with hardiebacker, no screws on the inside (glued on)

6. Butter and mesh the hardiebacker seams and curb with thinset

7. Coat with waterproofing roll-on

8. Tile

It's certainly not a quick process, but it's quite inexpensive.

With the use of a curb, is there another far superior method for a shower pan and walls?

If I went curbless, what's the best system or could I still go "traditional" with the shower pan?

Thanks, got it. I actually found your curb float video online last night so I'm on board with that method instead of the awkward method of trying to get the hardiebacker to stick and get everything true.

What's your go-to membrane system these days?
