Please HELP
Hello, I had a contractor rip out an old cultured marble showerin atlanta Ga. They used a vinyl liner amd intended to use a conventional drain. After watching almost all of Tile Coach's videos :) we ordered a Flo Fx drain with the adaptor kit. So the installers put up concrete backer board, mesh taped the seams and then applied a very thin, not even continuous coat of redguard on the walls. My fiance went over and did a better coat of redguard. The problem is that the contractor did not apply thinset to the concrete board seams. They just taped and redguarded. There are now 2 coats of redguard on the walls. We have VERY LITTLE faith in the contractor (he chipped floor tiles and covered the chips with grout).
So our plan was to move on with tiling tge walls because otherwise ot would need to be torn out. My fiance called RedGuard and they said itvdid need thinset in those seams BEFORE the redguard. My Fiancr said he COULD use a grinder and get the tape out redo the tape, apply thinset, and then re-RedGuard the seams. But he said the second coat had no cracks and thinks the concrete board seams should be ok.
He also planned to get hydrogen a d s&s (I think that's the company) tape for the mud pan corners and a liner for the pan. He also said we can do a hydrogen (paint on) on the shower pan because we are not confident in the job they did with the vinyl liner under the pan.
So 2 questions:
1) How should we proceed with the walls since thinset was not used over the tape between boards?
2) would it be ok to use the tape and s&s liner OVER the mud pan with hydroban brushed on?
I've read that you shouldn't sandwich the pan in two membranes, bit our thought is: if the top layer (tape, corners, liner, hydronan membrane is done well, water shouldn't ever get into the morter mud pan, so no sandwich-ing can occur.
My fiance is very skilled in construction...he built a 500 sf garage himself and has built houses for family but he is no tile expert. We are hoping you all can help. By the way, we've already paid them over 50% for the job 🤦🏼♀️😓 so starting over would be painful. My fiance can do some of the wprk, but we really do t know what to do at this point. Please please help. Thank ypu so much for reading. 🙏🏻
