Guidance

Hey hey, everyone, looking for some guidance. This has a few parts to it so please bear with me. I’m putting in a shower in my basement. There was no bathroom or anything before. Plumbing has been roughed in. I was in a time crunch (thanks to my better half) so I hired guys for drywall, I went out of town when they worked. Came back and was pissed. I told them cement board for shower, they used green board. Green board already mudded, primed and painted the color of   the bathroom. No way am I taking it all out. Should I put up cement board over it or would a coat of red guard suffice before I tile?

next question is the shower pan. It’s a custom sized shower so I’m going to make the pan. Seeing it’s the basement and a concrete slab do I need to…

Liquid vs Membrane for new tiler

Hi, I am trying to tile my own shower using the Laticrete Hydro Ban system. I have never tiled before. Current plan: Wall material: Laticrete Hydro Ban Board with sealant at seams and sealant over screw holes Wall Flattening: Built with Foam Shims to plumb walls Wall tile: 24" x 12" light grey marble tiles Floor tile: White marble basket weave mosaic (1"x2" and 3/8"x"3/8) Curb: Laticrete Hydroban shower curbs (white foam like a cheap cooler). Pan: Dry packed pan using Laticrete 209, Mortar Lock Ledgers, and FloFX bonding flange I originally planned to use liquid Hydro Ban 1 (single application, troweled on) as the sole waterproofing for the mud pan (e.g. no corner fabric). Since I have never tiled before, I was drawn to liquid Hydro Ban 1 alone since it minimized build up and would make tiling tiny mosaic tiles easier. However, after reading more on this forum, I am concerned that it won't be durable enough. Q: Is liquid Hydro Ban 1 alone a…

Considerations for Micro Cement in a New Construction Shower?

Hey everyone,

I am planning on self performing the work for a new construction curb less shower in my home. My wife and I would like to use Micro Cement. I want to use the Micro Cement on the shower walls, and floors of the entire bathroom. Does anyone have experience with this type of install? Am I approaching it right?

Here are some details and my plans:

  • Wood subfloor

  • Shower pan; Planning on a dry pack shower pan with FloFX FlowFx drain. install tar paper and metal lath under deck mud for adherence to wood subfloor.

  • Walls; Cement board backer

We have looked into it, and it requires a lot of maintenence and is very labor intensive (6 or 7 coats) from priming to sealing. I can't recommend anything on it. I've seen problems from it being in wet areas and not completely dried out after each use.

Valid Concerns or No?

Hi all! Need some insight and opinions, please. I'll introduce myself as probably a contractors worst nightmare simply for the fact that I love to learn how things are done, so I spend a lot of time researching which leads to a lot of questions for him. That being said, I'm in the midst of a huge project that involves 2 baths and a basement under contract with a GC. These 2 baths have been completely gutted and floorplans revised to better fit our needs which included all new plumbing and electrical. We're finally to the point of putting everything back together and I'm afraid its gone sideways and heading to disaster. I am panicking and need to decide whether to ride it out or stop all work when everyone comes back after new years. I have no idea what kind of "system" the contractors want to call this nor…

He's been doing it wrong for 10 years. It's just sub par work. Do it fast, get it done. No concern for correct.

You definitely need a 3rd party. Call another tile contractor. Let him come over and get a few laughs in. If it's really a problem I'll give you my phone number. I'm not shy about telling people they do terrible work
