Tile cutting, layout, backer board gap material and laser guide

Hello,

I have a few questions:

  1. I have large format tile 23" x 59". The longest side of the wall currently measures at 59" after adding the hardie backer which fits the tile perfectly but it doesn't have gap for some movement. Can you let me know which way I should stack the tiles at the corners so I can decide if I need to cut down the long side by an inch or so (see attached).

  2. Because I don't know what the final thickness of the tile is after applying thinset. If tiling with option A then I would start on the back (long side) then do the two short side walls. If tiling with option B should I start with the two short sides then the long side?

  3. And if option B, is it okay that one side overlaps another by just a little bit (1/8" or so) due to cutting error?

  4. For taping the gaps on hardie backer with cement board tape, can I use the same thinset as I am using for tiling the large format tile? Or does it need to be mortar (as specified on the hardie instructional video), then thinset for the laticrete pipe collar. I think I've heard both and am a bit confused about the difference between thinset and mortar.

  5. For cutting large format tile, I bought a makita cordless saw do you think this would be okay to cut along the long and short end? I can but it against the festool track. Any cutting blade you can recommend that can achieve a cleaner cut? https://www.homedepot.com/p/Makita-18V-LXT-Lithium-Ion-Brushless-Cordless-5-in-Wet-Dry-Masonry-Saw-Tool-Only-XCC01Z/318430875

  6. Any recommendation on how to use a laser guide? The laser bounces before it gets leveled so it takes a while, but if I use the fixed laser if I pin it on a wall that is not straight how do I know if the guide is correct? I have a dewalt guide.

Thank you!

Annie
