Adding Weep Holes to Kerdi Adapter Drain
Hi Friends. I completed a 24 hour “2 inch flood test” with an inflatable balloon plug well down the drain to make sure there were not pre-existing weep holes that were going to cause any future problems (below my new waterproof shower floor). Nothing leaked, so I presume that there were not any weep holes in the existing 25-year old existing drain. I have successfully installed (glued and bolted) in a Kerdi Adapter Ring to the original drain.
I am ready to glue in my Kerdi Adapter Drain into the Adapter Ring. The Drain inserted into the Adapter Ring fits very tight, so I have concerns that WATER coming down the Schluter pre-formed foam pan [that also has Laticrete Hydroban over the top] will sit BELOW the top of the drain, but then this water will not be able to flow into the drain pipe (since it is so tight and subsequently glued in the adapter flange).
Can I mark where the Drain downpipe will be at the TOP elevation of the Adapter Flange and then drill 4 or 8 holes around the downpipe to allow water to weep into the drain? What size hole would you drill? Any other ideas on how to “drain” the water that comes toward the drain that is below the top elevation of the drain grate?
If I DO drill some weep holes as described above, what trick would you use to not have thinset plug these weep holes when laying the floor tile?
Thanks!! Kimball

It is Schluter - the Orange "seal" was between the old drain (part of the 3-piece) and is attached to "adapter ring". I then put Kerdi Fix all over the orange rubber, and then bolted it down to the old drain (it was a little more complicated because none of the 6 or 7 "pre-formed" holes in the adapter ring matched up to the old drain bolts so I had to drill new holes in the new adapter ring). I believe this formed a tight seal between the old drain and the new adapter ring. The orange rubber came up from between the two pieces into the round hole where the bonding flange pressed down. To your question, the new bonding flange then receives [through a piece of ABS] the 2" drain pipe holding up the grate.
