Best Approach for First-Time DIY Shower Build?
Hey guys,
I’m about to start my first DIY shower project, converting a 1/2 bath in my basement into a full bath. I’m pretty handy and willing to try anything, but I’d prefer methods that are more "first-timer" friendly.
Space: 30"x60" alcove
Plan: Adding a 12" bench, leaving a 48"x30" area for the shower pan
I’ve attached a couple of inspiration pictures (not mine) that I’m using to visualize the framing, but I’m open to suggestions before I start building.
Should I frame everything like in the first picture, wrap in cement board, and go with a traditional dry pack pan with a membrane?
Or should I use a Kerdi foam pan with cement board for the walls and bench?
I’m still in the planning phase and flexible with my approach. Plumber is coming next week to open the slab and install the drain, so I need to finalize my decision soon so they can set it at the right height.
Any advice or suggestions on how to make this build easier or better would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Great choice!
