Cement Board to Mortar Pan Transition

Trying to identify appropriate method to direct contractor. I have seen different methods transitioning cement board to a mortar pan and want to make sure they do it right or I do if I end up doing it instead. In either, the shower liner should be between the cement board and framing looks like.

1. Cement board not embedded in the mortar pan, either with a small gap or sitting directly on top of the mortar bed. Thinset and sealing tape used to fill transition. Liquid hydroban on top ?

2. This image shows cement board embedded into the mortar bed. Would the sealing tape be necessary or any additional waterproofing on top in this instance?

Yes, you can thinset the board to the pan. Looks good!
