Installing mosaic in niche

Most of my issues in the bathroom remodel have come down to not getting my surface flat enough. My latest is the back of the shower niche. Too many irregularities and attempting to solve during tile install resulted in too much build up and the mosaic looking awful. So I ripped it off. Still have some irregularities after the repair that I'm afraid it will result in a substandard installation. I'm thinking I should just order in a piece of 3/16" kerdiboard and pre install the mosaic on it before installing in the niche. Any other suggestions?

I pre install tile on foam board to make up thickness upon occasion.

Looks like your sides are done. I would template, and just slightly overhang the foam with tile so it doesn't interfere with install

There is a 1\4 backer at Depot. Smaller sheets, kinda like sentinel. May be a faster option.

Everbuilt XPS I think. Worked in a pinch for me
