reinforcing concrete

I was looking at a photo and I was wondering what you all think about rebar or other reinforcing steel in concrete. Larry, Tilecoach are you guys doing it on your projects when you cut up a small trench for a drain?

I believe for a full shower area it’s not a bad idea to epoxy dowel in some #4 rebar 12” OC. But…if you are recessing concrete 2” and the slab is only 4”, you only have the bottom 2” to drill and dowel. So there is not much meat to grab a hold of there. In a residential floor, the 4” slab is just a floor. It’s not for support of any load bearing walls.

It’s not going to go anywhere, and I have never seen any type of failure through the finished flooring from trenching and not doweling.

If it’s just a trench I’d say no. If it’s a large area, it’s probably the right thing to do (according to the architects we’ve worked with).
