Float with mortar or fill using thinset?
What are the tradeoffs of floating the walls with mortar then setting tiles using thinset or using thinset to flatten/fill and tile in one step?
The walls variation is about 1/4" to 5/16" along the six foot back and 38" sidewalls, both vertical and horizontal. The walls are cement board, mesh tape covered seams, and Hydro Ban liquid membrane.
Are there issues floating over Hydro Ban on the walls?

We typically use speed set like you do...sometimes DIYers need the regular set up time. Especially on HB its going to flash pretty quickly.
