Shower head connection

I don't the the right terminology for pumbing connectors, so please forgive me. The fitting that one of my shower arms screws into sets back from the studs a little more than an inch (the other is more like 3/4"). Before I demo'd that wall, I couldn't see the fitting. I estimate the finished thickness of the wall will be about 1". That will make the fitting about 2" back from the tile.

Is that ok? What is the right depth? (And what do you call that fitting?)

1/2" female "Drop Ear". 2" back should be fine. If not you can always get a longer "shower arm"
