How much variance can you have with your wall and when do you need to float your walls?
I’m remodeling my shower stall with the following…
1. Tile Redi Shower pan 36”x48” (Installed)
2. GoBoard Backer Board with 1/8” seam (Installed)
3. 12”x 28” Schluter Niche (Installed)
4. Sealed seams with GoBoard Pro-Sealant (Applied)
5. Started Covering seams with 5” membrane tape (Second Layer of protection) (Installed).
6. Planning to add Kerdi-Band around the Niche and in the corners (Second Layer of protection).
7. Planning to use 3” x 6” Subway Tile ¼" thick
My walls are not perfectly plumb. Horizontally I have ¼” variance and vertically I have 3/16“ on the left wall

The back wall has a slight bow which is causing the Horizontal variance. If I Tile the side wall first, can I hide this variance with the back wall Tile which is ¼" thick.

Vertically, I have 3/16” of a variance which was created when I added waterproof membrane to the seam.

Can this be corrected by using a smaller Trowel over the seam or is this a minor issue?
Do I need to float my wall or is variances less than 1/2" a non-issue?

Great advice and this answered a question I had too. I built my side walls so I know they are plumb. But my back wall is made of cinder block and it is a 1/4” out of plumb from bottom to top.(8’ to ceiling) So can I use thinset to fix that using the screed method?
