Pebble shower floor

So I've dry fit the shower floor as seen in the pics below. I've also been advised by a tile contractor friend to ditch the pebbles in favor of something with conventional grout lines. He reports that he doesn't put these in anymore because the amount of grout lends itself to holding water and ultimately mildewing - and the resulting smell is too much for most homeowners.

Do you all have any input here? I'm just a homeowner that likes to do his own work and this is my personal shower. Now is the time to change course if in fact this is something I need to worry about.

Is there another way to deal with this - such as a treatment I can put on the grout or even a maintenance plan going forward once it's in place.
