bathroom tile choice

So this is a mockup of what we thought we were gonna do.

(Versailles pattern walls, faux wood planks, etc)

Went to the tile store where the lady looked at us aghast.

"I wouldn't put that in the shower!"

(She also thought that a computer modelled tile map was a "recipe for disaster" which is complete nonsense - I did it quite successfully on the previous project)

Anyway, now we're second guessing ourselves on this Versailles thing.

Opinions welcomed.

The tile we planned in the shower and tub area is a Versailles pattern porcelain tile. Slightly rough texture but not exceedingly so. Tile lady thought it would be hard to keep clean (?). (Well then why would you put it on a floor - dirt magnet - which is its more common application).

Is this like a major faux pas? I see that Versailles patterns are certainly way more common on floors than walls for whatever reason. Is there a compelling reason not to put it on the walls?

One consideration that I can see is that the largest of the Versailles pattern tiles is big - 16" x 24" - which might pose difficulty if the walls are not dead flat (they're pretty flat after a lot of shimming, etc)

Thanks

Steve

I agree. Build it for yourself. Odds are, even if you resale no matter what the buyers would have picked a differnt tile, no matter how safe it is. I look at carerra marble look 12x24's and can automatically tell its a flip house. It looks cheap to me. White 3x12 subway horizontal stagger...same thing. So pick what you like. The versailles is a beautiful pattern used for ages and not that hard to excecute if you have it mapped out. It might even afford you some wiggle room, as the joints don't line up with the adjascent tile.
