Bathroom and Shower Marble Tile Installation

Hello everyone,

I hope this message finds you well. I'm reaching out to gather insights on the most effective methods for installing marble tiles in bathrooms, with a particular focus on walls, floors, and the shower water pan. Given marble's high porosity and the challenges it presents in wet environments, I aim to utilize premium-quality materials to guarantee exceptional craftsmanship. Ensuring the longevity and aesthetic appeal of the marble is paramount, especially in high-usage areas that require frequent cleaning and sealing.

Could anyone share their experiences or recommendations on preventing water or moisture penetration beneath the marble to avoid compromising the installation? Additionally, I'm interested in learning about the latest technologies and best practices employed in the industry to address these concerns effectively.

Your expertise and advice will be greatly appreciated as I strive to achieve the highest standards of installation.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

@Larry S @Isaac Ostrom  I have met with the client and assessed the job. The findings are as follows:

  • It appears that the client's general contractor has already hot mopped the shower pan and bench. I would like to understand whether it would be best to proceed with the following steps:

  1. Remove the existing hot mop.

  2. Prepare the ceiling, walls, and floors with tar paper and lath sheet.

  3. Float the ceiling and walls, and dry pack the floors sloping towards the drain. Could you recommend a reputable brand for the dry pack?

  4. Install the Schluter Kerdi Membrane over the floated walls, ceilings, and shower pan floor. I need advice on whether unmodified or modified thin-set is ideal for attaching the membrane, including the preformed corners and Schluter Kerdi band.

  5. Apply two coats of Hydroban on the shower pan, walls, and ceilings.

  6. Install shower floor marble mosaic. According to the client, the marble mosaic comes with a resin-backed sheet, which we plan to remove and then clean the tiles with acetone. We intend to use Epoxy Thinset, specifically LATAPOXY 300 Adhesive, ensuring a gap of 3/16 or 1/4 inch from the wall. This will be followed by sealing the stone with two coats of StoneTech BulletProof Sealer and filling in the gaps with epoxy silicone. The shower pan will be grouted with epoxy grout.

  7. Install tiles on the walls and ceiling. Should I use Epoxy thinset for these areas as well? What is the best method to ensure these areas are safely prepared? This will be followed by sealing with StoneTech BulletProof Sealer and then applying epoxy grout.

Your expertise and feedback on these proposed steps would be greatly appreciated to ensure the highest quality and safety standards are met.
