Hydroban waterproofing with vinyl pan
On my tub to shower conversation I'm having a pro do the plumbing changes. During our discussions he said he could do a traditional vinyl with a deck mud pan and just let me deal with the tile installation. I figure if it do that I should use normal Hardi-backer on the walls and then a paint on waterproofing like Hydroban.
Should I also go over the pan surface like it's a surface membrane system and consider the underlying vinyl pan as backup insurance or just paint the Hardi-backer down to the pan and depend on the normal vinyl pan?

Use durock not hardibacker. And yes you can Hydro ban the walls. Second, do not apply hydroban to the pan if it is a traditional pan liner. If you want to use a sealed system, have him float the pan for you with a flofx flange and then paint on the Hydro Ban.
