Starting Lineup

Getting started?

My main problem right now is I'm having a hard time formulating a plan because I have too much information. It's possible I'm over thinking it. There seems to be a lot of mixing and matching of techniques and materials. My project is a simple one compared to most I see here. I'm tearing out an old shower that is aproximately 34" X 36" and replacing it in tile. The shower is on the second floor and the floor is 3/4 plywood. So far I'm thinking my best course of action is to do my own curb with 2x4s and cement board, build my own dry pack pan, cement board the walls and wrap everyting in some sort of Kerdi type waterproof wrap? Considering this is my first and probably last shower do you think this is the best way to go? Foam seems easier but I'm still getting used to the idea and I'm not quite there yet. It just seems too fragile, especially for curbs and floors. I also kinda like the idea of doing a dry pack slope pan. I consider myself to be fairly compentent in the DYI home repair area, with lots of experinece in wood working, tile, plumbing, you name it. The only thing I hate doing is electrical.
