Laying large format tile

I am getting ready to start tiling my new shower. I will be using 12X24 tile and wanted to know if anyone has any best practices to aid this job. Secondly, any concerns or pitfalls I may need to be aware of. For instance, I have seen some tilers set a ledger board to start the second row of tile and then come back lay the first row.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Everything Martin said along with back butter the tiles and use a tile leveling system. You might be able to get away with a 3/8 x 1/4 notch but most likely 1/2 x 1/2. Set one and peal it off to check for coverage. Check your tile for flatness. Some tiles have a bow to them which is impossible to get out and will require a stack pattern or 30% offset to prevent lippage. Also check for tile size variation. Some tiles may be a 1/16th larger than other tiles requiring a larger grout joint to accommodate the variations.
