Dry pack on dirt

I have removed some concrete for a curbless shower on a concrete slab. However, around the drain, the previous concrete was removed and after cleaning all of it , there is a hole with the foundational dirt right below the concrete (only 4 inches thick). Basically there is no more concrete at all around the drain, about 6 inches in radius. Do i need to place some concrete as a subfloor before doing drypack?, or can I drypack directly into the hole surrounding the drain?

Ha. 'specially designed'.... My buddy has that same cup 'specially designed' as an escutcheon for his pedastal sink.

What a wonderful and versatile product
