Shower Niche material?

For a little extra challenge, I decided to put a simple, 12" x 12" shower niche into my project. It's all framed with cement board, waterproofed and ready to tile. I'm just a little unsure of my choice of materials. For the back I will use the same octagional tiles as are in the floor pan. for the sides I planned to use a 3" x 12" edg tile, with one long side haveing a finished, tapered edge. I would need to cut a thin strip of tile to go behind each side piece, as the sides are slightly wider than my edg tiles. My question is" For a simple shower niche install, is it OK to use an edge tile of this type for the sides of the niche? It just seemed like an easy way to get a finished edge. I'm also thinking I would need to cut a mitered joint at the edges where the horozontal tile meets the vertical tile? I don't want to go metal trim, although I'll be using it for the vertical edges on the outer edge of the shower walls. I was also thinking that rather than using the edge tiles on all four sides, it might look better if I used a piece of marble or stone for the bottom shelf and did the sides in the edg tiles? I'm willing to change my aproach and materials but I'm trying to keep it simple. Of course the wall tile will go on first, flush to the edge of the niche.

Either way is fine. We change it up, but for the most part we miter our schluter on the niches. If you are using bullnose, we usually butt them.
