So what's the difference.....
if I put the mortar on the wall and put the notches/ridges in it, or if I put the mortar on the tile and put the notches/ridges in it? Yesterday when I was doing the "second row" of tiles (it's a row below the ledger board and above the bottom row) I decided for some reason to just "back butter" the wall and put the mortar with the notches on the tile. I just thought this was an easier way to do it since I had to do a little finagling to get the row level since I counldn't use my levelers (no spacers cause the ledger board was there)
Hopefully that made sense. Anyway, it seemed it was a lot easier to collapse the ridges and there was a lot less mess. Less mortar inbetween the grout area and such. I only did that with three tiles so if it's a terrible no-no it's not that big of a deal, but if it's OK to do it that way, I might just do it that way as it seemed to work a lot better for me. Not sure why, but it did.
Thoughts? Thanks guys.

Yep, what @Bryan Jennings said. No problem doing it that way.
