Cutting holes for drop ears, shower valves and such

I just have to say I really suck at this. I measure two or three times and I still get it wrong. Is there a training wheels way of getting the hole exactly right for the drop ear? Seriously, if this is how badly i'm doing with the wallboard, I am too scared to cut my tile.

It's all about measuring from a fixed level point.

Put the level on the floor maybe with a spacer or two, and take your measurements from that level surface.

Then, when the first board is installed perfectly level, you have a great surface to take drop ear measurements from. Then use a 1-1\8 drill bit for a perfect hole
