Leave a gap around pipes?

In order to check for possible leaks around the shower and body spray pipes after tile is set, should'nt we leave an open gap around them (maybe 1/2" around and look in with a flashlight) and not waterproof all the way to the pipe/temporary plug? How else are we going to know if we are leak free after installing the shower arm and water port?

Hey Jonathan- you will not install your shower arm (pipe) until the tile is finished. Leave the temporarily one in until then so you can tile around it. When installing the shower arm, I recommend 5 wraps of teflon tape and then pipe dope (thread sealant) on top of that. Make sure you get to a snug fit. If you go to far and cannot get a full turn to the position needed and have to back it out, I would remove it (take off the Teflon tape) and repeat the entire process making sure you end it in its final position while tightening it, not loosening it. No need to leave a gap to check for leaks. If the arm is tight, you will be fine. If the arm ever feels loose, then you have a problem.
