Mortar Bed Pan w/ HardieBacker + Redguard ???

Hi All,

New to the forums but have watched countless hours of Isaac's videos while working on a pretty big home renovation at my place. Really appreciate all the great information and I plan to use the videos for all the steps in my build.

First bathroom was fairly easy, installed a new cast iron tub with hardiebacker walls + redguard, pretty low risk due to the tub handling all the heavy lifting.

Master bathroom is a different story. The dimensions for the shower do not allow for any sort of premanufactured shower pan so I have spent A LOT of time considering all the options and have settled on a sloped mortar bed with hardiebacker walls + redguard over the walls and mortar bed. My subfloor is 1-1/8" T+G plywood so its sturdy BUT not very level which is why I steered away from a foam pan. Leaning towards just using (2) 2x4s for the curb + 1/2" sheet of hardie. I will use thinset and alkali-resistant mesh tape on all the wall board joints and a FLO-FX drain.

Is there anything wrong with my general approach to this build? Any good reason NOT to use a mortar bed pan + hardiebacker on the walls and then regaurd over the entire enclosure? I am not really married to any of these products but have the Redguard leftover from the first bathroom and just figured I shouldn't let it go to waste. I am in no hurry and do not mind the hardiebacker being more difficult to hang than foam board, my only focus is making sure it doesnt leak :)

***Walls will be 6" hex ceramic tiles and the floor is 12"x12" sheets of 1" porcelain penny mosaic. I am TBD on what to use on the curb since the 6" hex will be a nightmare, might go with a few big pieces of quartz.

Thanks in advance!
