Drywall ok for non waterproof tile?
I'm going to be extending the tile from my tub surround along the bathroom wall and creating a surround behind the bathroom sink. Can I use drywall for the areas that don't need to be waterproofed, or do I need to be using cement board? I'm using Hydroban board for the tub surround. The tile portion will be about a full sheet of drywall high (48")
Thanks!!

No NEED for it. But primer is still ok. Not paint
But from experience, bare drywall will suck up a bit MORE moisture initially from your thinset.
Primer will not soak up so much.
I make my thinset the teeniest but wetter on bare wall and usually give just a slight sponge wipe before install.
We usually drywall, finish, and prime the whole bath as 1 large step. We like to lock in all that drywall dust and work in a clean place from then on. So we tile over primer often.
