I used an oscillating tool with a diamond blade to quickly grind out the clips that wouldn't cooperate. The tile texture and grout line width was forgiving for this, so I wouldn't do it unless there's enough space between the tiles, cause it's really easy to get impatient and zorch a tile.
Fortunately, and unfortunately, when I chose 1/8" grout clips, I didn't know the tile was beveled, so the base was 1/8" but the visible grout line is 3/16", so I had space to go ham on the bzzzzzzzzrt tool.
