The niche shelf, leading edge, and Schluter trim...

As exact as I've attempted to be in framing and hanging rock, I blundered slightly on the shelf of the niche.

The bottom shelf slopes slightly toward the shower, but the screwup was that it's not actually level the whole way. The variance over 5 feet is about 1/4", but it's not the entire length of the shelf, it's a slight slope to the center, and then it's relatively level.

Since there's a high point to the niche, which is at the back of the shelf, I think I can solve it by floating the shelf just like I would the shower pan, using thinset.

So, my plan is to attach a dam to the front edge of the shower niche, slightly below a level line on the back edge at the high point, then fill it with thinset and screed it so it's level.

Question 1: Is that a good plan or should I just tile it and use the thinset to level everything?

Question 2: When I install the Quaddec trim to the front of the niche, would it be better to embed the trim on the wall of the shower just below the front edge, or on the top of the shelf of the niche? Either orientation would work, but if I embed it on the wall below the front edge, then I can use it to find a level position for the trim, then I'll have a ledger with which to level the shelf surface. Thoughts?

We set the trim on the inside of the niche in most cases.
