Well, if you waterproof the cement board (I like Mapei aqua defense or Hydro Ban) then I also treat the base. Let dry. Then cover with waterproof membrane using a thinset slurry and run 4” tape around the base where floor meets walls. Then thinset the tape 2” on walls and on floor. So it won’t matter if your cement board is off the ground or not. I recommend you find some videos on pouring a dry pack base. Issac has a few that are good.
