Basic Construction Questions

Watched many of your videos and they are great. Appreciate your checking out new products and the detail you show in the installation. I have to remodel a steam shower as the previous owner put stone tile on top of a fiberglass pan and it cracked and leaked. Demo starting next week.

Planning on using a RSS or schluter pan for our 60 x 70 inch floor. If the walls are water proofed with hydroban or with a waterproofing membrane why use durorock on the walls. If its waterproofed why does it matter? Durorock is a nuisance to work with.

In other threads I saw you said you prefer a membrane to cover the walls and the pan but then indicated hydroban was good on the walls but a membrane on the pan is preferred. Which is the preferred method from a leak perspective and less susecptible to mistakes?

Besides a sloped ceiling anything else to take into consideration for a steam shower?

If I hire a contractor what would be some good probing questions? I have recommendations but would be nice to have some good questions. Both were going to build there own pans.

Residential steam showers should use sheet membrnane on the walls. I wouldn't worry about sloping the cieling. Laticrete requires Durock or other cement boards on the walls before using Laticrete Hydro Ban liquid or Hydro Ban Sheet Membrane. Schluter, RSS, and FloFX allow their membrane to be used on drywall.
