I'll say it again so hopefully others can see: Do a test board.
Take the backerboard you're using or whatever, trowel some thin set on it with whatever size you think will work, put the material down on it, tamper (or damper, not sure which one) it in and lift it...if you have good coverage without very much "splooge" out of the mesh, that's the trowel you use. Don't take mine or Larry's advice (although Larry's recommendation of 1/4x1/4 is probably spot on) do your own test. Learn how to fish, that's what this forum is about!
