Cti training video
I was watching the Cti training videos for fun and came across something that didn’t make any sense to me.

It’s the backer board course where they instruct to tape and thinset the inside corners but ensure that no thinset enters the expansion joint between the two planes. So 1/3 of the tape is thinset to plane A and 1/3 to plane B with no thinset on the middle third which left me wondering why. It seems to me that given the reasoning of needing an expansion/contraction joint the tape isn’t actually doing anything so what’s the point of installing it in the first place?

That is a good point. The tape is literally doing nothing. Also, TCNA recommends following the manufacturer instructions which clearly do not show this detail. Here is the video for permabase instructions, showing a full embedding of the tape at the inside corners. https://youtu.be/VzDv7BjZATo
Another clear example of conflicting information in our industry.
