General rule of thumb.
1\2" notch collapses to 1\4".
3\8" collapses to 3\16"
And so on. " Generally".
Hi:
My tiles are 7-7/8" H x 19-11/16" L x 5/16" thick... and the leveling system I purchased to help with the install give me 1/8" grout lines and leaves only 1/16" thinset between the wall and the back of the tile. That will bring the finished wall surface out to 3/8" from the waterproofed backer board if I am correct in my thinking.
Unless more thinset will be left behind beyond the thickness of the leveling systems clip thickness. That being the case should I then use a 1/4" notch trowel to ensure only 1/16" is left as the leveling system is set up for that or perhaps the 3/8" notch and then retrowel the extra that smushes out and clean our grout lines for extra that comes out through those areas to ensure full coverage?
I ask because Isaac has said that when using a large format tile like I have a 1/2" notch is required. But doing that seems counter intuitive to the leveling systems set thinset thickness.
What is the purpose of the 1/2" notch trowel for larger format tiles? Do larger format tile need more thinset to stay secured to the walls? If that is the case should I return the leveling and spacing system I purchased and find one that is specific for large format tiles?
Thanks

You can skip the mesh if you use the fabric.
You're over thinking this man.
2x4 wall.... we put a flat 2x6 in the back of the cavity for the valve. Another flat 2x4 up top to screw the drop ear to.
Put a temporary 5" nipple while you board and tile.
Most of these Delta\Moen are designed with that flat 2x4 in mind.
After tile, buy a few nipple sizes (close nipple, 1.5, 2,2.5). Find one that fits. Inside pipe wrench for a tight turn.
That's it. No math, no worries.
