Mud question

Hey folks. Before doing my first wetbed I did a lot of research on mud. Everything I found said the same thing, 5:1 is the ideal ratio. Yet any and all prepackaged mud I could find in my area (southeast PA) was either 3:1 or 4:1. In the end I opted to mix my own using Portland and concrete sand which turned out well but the concrete sand had a lot of small pebbles in it which I found annoying to finish. If 5:1 is the industry standard why are all these companies that make floor/deck mud using a richer formula then what is the industry standard? It just doesn’t make sense to me.

I'm really not sure. Thats a great question. Maybe ANSI has a specification requiring 4-1. The TCNA handbook as a reference page that talks about mud all the way up to 7-1. But the TCNA is just a recommendation for specification, not a specification itself.

They key is getting good sand. I would purchase play sand or another that has finer granules in it if you are going to mix your own.
