The gap from the subfloor to the bottom edge of the wallboard.

Question: How much of a gap from the subfloor to the bottom of the wallboard should I leave so that I can slide the shower pan with thin set into the gap once all the wall work is finished?

In one of the videos made by Tile Coach, he installed the wallboard before putting in the RSS pan.  The pan was not back buttered but he used a 1/2 by 1/2 trowel.  After applying the thin-set, he installed the pan which slid under the wallboard as he had intentionally left a large enough gap between the subfloor and wallboard to allow for this.

It all depends on the pan. I only did it this way becuase the pan was a custom size and it was measured stud to stud, not board to board and I didn't want to cut the pan down on all sides. But figure on 1/8" to 3/16" for thinset plus the pan and probably another 1/8" for wiggle room.
