Shower Door Idea?? (with pics)
I’m building a bathroom in my basement. It’s well underway but the one thing I have yet to detail is the shower door. It’s a fairly narrow bathroom so when you walk out of the shower (36” deep x 48” wide) there will be a vanity on the other side of the room only about 28 inches from the linear drain. Not enough for a large swinging door. I’d like to keep it minimal and classy.
The idea I have is a bifold glass door that folds into the shower. Since the shower is 48 inches wide each panel would be roughly 24 inches. As it swings into the shower the two panels would stack on the left side wall, opposite the showerhead and valve, extending 24 inches, 2/3 of to the way to the back wall. Having two large glass panes cantilevered the full 48 inches with a hinge in the middle is probably not structurally very strong but maybe it can handle it? There is a lot of blocking on both side walls to accommodate any hinge position I go with.
If that would incur too much stress on the hinges and glass, I could use the same bifold door, but the unsupported end would suspend from a barn door style wheel and pivot pin. I’d like to know if anyone has seen something like this done, or if someone has a better idea. Thanks for your input!

I guess I was hoping for a wider opening than 24”. Also the stationary part would be basically right over the line drain. I did things a little different where Instead of putting the line drain at the far end of the shower, you step over it where the shower curb would normally be. I did this because the floor was already sloped in that direction.
